How to Make a Basic Bun

The bun is a simple and easy style for keeping your hair out of your face, and this is helpful at the gym. Also, the bun and create a sleek and elegant look when you are heading out to a party or event. This is a fairly easy style to create, too. Here are the basics:

Lightly spray your hair with water. You do not want to soak your hair, but dampen it enough so it is easy to work with.

Apply a styling gel to your hair. This will give you the "slick" look. There are a variety of these grooming gels available in stores and at your salon. Gels are great for controlling the frizzies and keeping hair in place in humid weather, too.

Using a ponytail holder, secure your hair into a ponytail. Position the top of the ponytail where you want your bun to lay down. A good rule of thumb is setting it down low is nice for an elegant look, and a higher bun is great if you are hanging out in the house or going for a workout.

If you have long or very thick hair, separate your hair into two sections, and if your hair is thing or normal, just the one section is sufficient. Twist the hair around the ponytail holder. For longer hair, you may want to use a bobby pin to secure the hair and then continue twisting it around. For thinner and shorter hair, you should be able to wrap the hair completely around and secure it with pins when it is all wrapped around. Think of the pun as a circle, and space the pins about 45 degrees apart.

Make sure the very end of the ponytail is tucked and secured with a pin. Depending on what you will be doing, you might want to get a very fine hair net that matches your hair color to put over the bun. This will keep all the hairs in place in the bun. If you put a net over the bun, be sure to pin it in so it is secure.

Once you are secure and pinned in, give your hair a quick once over with some hairspray to lock it all into place.

There are variations on the bun. Not only is there a sleek and neat ballerina type bun, but there is a strategically tousled looking bun, too. It is a simple hairstyle that can be slightly tweaked to create an entirely different look.

That's it! You now have your bun all done and secured. A "no muss" and "no fuss" look in just a few minutes is possible.
