Leather has been a consistent Fall trend for the past several years, and the good news is that it remains dominant for Fall 2010. In the past we have been limited to jackets and leggings, but this Fall we see leather used in all categories from coats to dresses, bottoms and accessories.
Leather was used as a detail throughout almost all collections and is a key component for the Fall wardrobe. Some designers took leather dressing to new heights by creating all leather looks putting jackets with pants and leather accessories. Other designers used leather as a trim incorporated into outerwear, pants, and cut-outs within dresses.
Here is a bit of what is going on with leather:
Coats and outerwear: Going beyond the motorcycle style jacket, we now see leather coats in trench and cropped versions.
Dresses: Leather dresses are very popular now, and are seen in just about every style, including strapless.
Pants: The basic leather pant has always been a favorite, and this Fall you can see full cut trousers as well as tight fitting motorcycle pants in your stores.
Skirts: You will see leather skirts ranging from the thin pencil skirt to a full, 1950's style. The short cropped skirt with a very architectural feel to it is also quite popular for a clean and professional look.
For an affordable way to get in on this trend, look for clothing that has leather detailing, like trim on collars and cuffs and buttons. This is very popular in the junior clothing market because it is cool and affordable to wear leather this way. Patches of leather on a top or skirt will allow you to be in style and save a bit of money at the same time. Long live leather (it isn't going anywhere anytime soon)!
